Our story

Curious Red is dedicated to crafting high-quality timeless products designed to delight, be impressively functional, and last for years (and, hence, reduce waste).

And, there's no better testament to these values than our flagship product: Maku. The All-day, everywhere sandals. Built over 7 years & 37 iterations in the real world, they are designed for life!

Maku sandals were first launched to the world in a Kickstarter campaign that doubled it's goal in 8 hours, and pre-sold ~1300 Makus.

Behind the scenes, we are a small team of three—Will, Hanane, & David—working to design, manufacture, and deliver unique and norm-changing products to the world.

Taking a stand against fast fashion

If you're familiar with fast fashion (aka planned obsolescence), then maybe you're as irritated by the practice as we are. Planned Obsolescence is the practice of intentionally and artificially limiting the useful life of a product, at the design phase, for the purpose of driving more sales.

Curious Red lives on the opposite end of this spectrum. We're dedicated to crafting high-quality timeless products designed to last (and, hence, reduce waste). And we have designed Makus with that mindset. They are made from some of the best materials and are intentionally designed to last for years. This same philosophy will live on in all our products lines.

How it all started

In 2009, frustrated by the options available to me (Will), I handmade myself a pair of sandals to run in. I ended up wearing them more than all my other shoes. People would regularly come up to me on the streets asking me where I got them from. That's when I knew we were onto something.

5 years and 37 trials later, we finally had it right. So right, in fact, that as soon as we had sold 50 pairs, a hundred more lined up. With each pair taking us 4 hours to make by hand, we had to find a better way to do this... That’s when Hanane, David, and I decided to team up and give these sandals a real shot. And so, Maku was born and we launched on Kickstarter!
